the revolution, erm, nervous breakdown will be livejournaled - Diary of a Necromancer
Excuse me, I'm making perfect sense, you're just not keeping up
the revolution, erm, nervous breakdown will be livejournaled
...And I think for the sake of what I laughingly refer to as my dignity I'll attribute the breaking down in tears just now more to the fact that what actually started it was sitting here thinking how I haven't even got anyone I could go hang out with IRL. My social network is a hell of a lot more robust than it used to be, but it's still almost entirely online or based around specific events, not the "I feel bad right now, you want to go out to lunch to cheer me up?" sort of interactions that make up most Normal People's lives. I need more meatspace friends... or maybe just a damn job that'd get me out of the house, that would probably help with the Meeting Live Humans part.

Apparently there are plenty of writers in Chicago **waves**.

There are enough Starbucks in this city to meet at, and enough theatre to go to, and... you get my drift...

And if I recall, you're probably somewhere in my neck of the woods, at that (loosely defined as "over by the cemetery")... Plans must be Made.

Yes they must, and I love your icon.

Aha... Northwest Side of Chicago rules. Well, Chicago in general rules. Speaking of the cememtery have you checked out one of the two across the street from that one? In Montrose Cemetery is the memorial to the Iroquis Theater Fire. It's very cool, by why here? I have not deduced that from my research yet.
robling_t From: robling_t Date: October 3rd, 2009 01:37 am (UTC) (permalink this entry)
Pick a time that works for you, my schedule's pretty open...

And I think the Iroquois fire thing is mostly that Montrose was convenient for a large number of incoming 'cos it was a new cemetery then or something. (Bohemian has the Eastland victims somewhere, I keep meaning to go have a proper look...) I actually went round and took some pictures last summer, but they were lost when the HD went down. :(

The Eatsland victims are in Section 16, closer to NEIU. Bohemian is on the National Registry of Historic Places, at least the main gates were designated in 1976, the 100th Anniversary of the opening of that place.

Interesting thing, in the chapel used to be two large urns that held ashes from a concentration camp and from Lidice, a town obliterated by the Nazi's. Those have somehow disappeared. I know they were there because I have seen them. Where did they go? There's a story there....

The Most Psychic City... Chicago is...

My schedule is hectic for a bit. But I am one of the people running the Whoniverse Photoshoot on October 24th.

Yeah, I've got that on my iCal, I'll try to get it together to find a ride out to the rendezvous... (I have two Four scarves and a very small Jack coat to contribute to the effort)

If I lived where you did, I would gladly take you out for lunch. Perhaps we should set up a lunch drive for all cool LJ'ers to take it in turns to lunch date you. You would probably eat free for the next five to ten years:)

Wish I could do something a little more direct though, hang in there.

This is a very cool idea. Hm... I call Thursday, October 14th. Waddya say, Sam?

This idea has definite potential...

The Take Sam To Lunch Project? I like the sound of that... :)

Oh, hon, I know that feeling. 8-(

I have a fair number of friends and friendly acquaintances, but there are VERY few I can talk to about what I really obsess over. I can talk with my nephew and my son about playing World of Warcraft. I can talk with my son a little about Torchwood, as long as I don't get too fangirl about it. But then, he lives in England, so even with Skype, the time difference interferes. I can talk a little about Torchwood with my Mom, but frankly, while I think she likes my writing, she doesn't really get the more obsessive side of the process, and she keeps pushing me to write "real stuff". So you guys are it for the fangirl side of my life. Even so, NO ONE understands why I became an Owen/Andy shipper (YOU did that to me!!!).

Sweetheart, I wish I lived up near you. I used to, many years ago. I lived in Carpentersville and Dundee. But now I am in San Antonio and can only give you a virtual hug. Sorry. Best I can do.

robling_t From: robling_t Date: October 3rd, 2009 01:43 am (UTC) (permalink this entry)
Yeah, San Antonio would be a bit far... But virtual hugs do help, believe me. And I'm lucky enough that Mum kind of gets the fangirl stuff (I have even caught her watching Torchwood when I come in from knitting, which I rib her about mercilessly), but yeah, there's always that edge of "...and you're doing what with your talent?" there... {sigh}

I'd like to meet more people in person, but I don't have that many opportunities. I'm slightly puzzled as to where one would meet people in person, at least the kind of 'let's go for a coffee' people I would like to meet.

I think people kind of pick up their crowd in school and drift along from there, possibly adding some from work depending; neither of which avenues really helps at this stage of my life, 'cos even if I did get around to going back to school or find a Real Job I've been out of the game long enough that I kind of picture it ending in a killing spree out of sheer misanthropic frustration at The Stupid That Men Do...

I remember back in the day, when some of the folks on LJ would get together using this site Meetup thing . . ah, those were the days!

I admit that most of my friends come from the larger science fiction community, which LJ expanded significantly for me. (That is, several of the people I met via LJ meetups turned out to already read a bunch of the stuff, even go to the occasional convention.)

It also helps to have friends with interesting relations.
robling_t From: robling_t Date: October 7th, 2009 09:41 pm (UTC) (permalink this entry)
Yeah, the Meetup thing kind of died off, alas...
ashnistrike From: ashnistrike Date: October 2nd, 2009 10:11 pm (UTC) (permalink this entry)
Weren't we going to get together? And then there was a crisis? And then another crisis? Could we still do that? The getting together part, I mean, not the another-crisis part. I really don't want another crisis.
robling_t From: robling_t Date: October 3rd, 2009 01:47 am (UTC) (permalink this entry)
Yeah, crisis would be bad, but we do need to get it together for something before it gets cold... er...

Yeah, I sort of remember you from the LJ meetups, pity those kind of fell by the wayside as people Got Lives -- should try to revive that, wot?

I know we don't know each other well, but would you like to meet downtown for lunch some time? I'm at UIC every day and my classes end at either 12:15 or 1. The Loop is a quick trip by Blue Line.

Hm, it could be arranged, with a bit of lead time, I go to knitting groups on Tuesdays and Wednesdays but my schedule's otherwise pretty flexible...
