On near misses. - Diary of a Necromancer
Excuse me, I'm making perfect sense, you're just not keeping up
On near misses.
Adventures in Homeowning #7: I walked into the kitchen at the height of the storm to find that the flash flood advisories included garden apartments. I quickly traced the problem to a paper napkin that had blocked off the drain at the bottom of the steps that lead down to our back door, and once I'd cleared away the debris, the standing water outside drained away with no further difficulties, leaving a high-water mark to show that at its height the puddle outside had overtopped the protective ledge of the back stoop by about an inch or so, and the back door doesn't achieve a tight enough seal at the bottom to have retarded it much. Nothing we couldn't tidy up with the sacrifice of a few clean towels, and no real harm done, but a good lesson learned about the importance of keeping an eye on the state of that drain, particularly as the leaves begin to fall. On the plus side, we needed to mop the kitchen floor anyway.

feeling: soggy

We have drain issues at my house too. If I don't keep an eye on the drain that leads to the drywell when it rains, we end up with a wading pool by our side door. Nothing as dramatic as what happened to you, mind you, but it's still something I need to keep my eye on.
