Diary of a Necromancer - why am I the one who's learnt the lessons of the hoarding shows I can't even stand to watch...
Excuse me, I'm making perfect sense, you're just not keeping up

why am I the one who's learnt the lessons of the hoarding shows I can't even stand to watch...
We spent all day yesterday working on the "studio", and, um... well. At least now the freestanding piles in there are "take to $CHARITY" and "take to $SPECIALTY_RECYCLING" (neither of which was obviously going to happen on a holiday Sunday) instead of "I'll deal with that in some unspecified not-now", and we even made a start on the stage of the process that involves sitting down with A BOX and doing a rough-sort of the contents into better subcategories than "this isn't mine so I'll throw it in this box and stick it on a shelf". (As near as I can reconstruct, the last time Mum got fed-up and went in there to organize, she tidily filed away stuff I had already been staging for removal... Argh.) We did divest ourselves of a lot of obviously disposable stuff, including a load that we hauled over to the regular-recycling drop when I started feeling guilty about how much we'd already asked of our own dumpsters.

So, overall, some sense of progress, punctuated with occasional screaming fights. Mum has some... issues... with letting go of stuff that's "still good", even once circumstances have plainly moved on from the potential of ever using them -- which I can see where she's getting that, given that her Mum's family lost everything in the Depression and my grandmother was very borderline-hoardy about exactly that sort of stuff; I do have my own issues just from growing up around them, but at least I have a shorter attention-span and I can get to "...Bored now" about keeping things much sooner. I'm mostly trying to keep her on-task by saving my energy for the largest battles and pointing out, repeatedly, that if she hasn't seen it for the last six moves then there's a good chance we don't need it.

Also, in a not-entirely-unrelated general house-tidying-binge note, turns out dimmable CFLs bug the crap out of me with their buzzing and now I'm going to be sitting here in the dark until Mum gets home and I can swap these out for the old incandescents still in her bedroom's can-lights. Stupid dimmer-switch that I don't even use... {grumble}

Go you on the cleaning! That sort of thing is always a pain.
